How to know if you have dementia

The situation

Your sister pulled you aside this Thanksgiving.  Mom’s been asking the same question over and over, and she keeps losing her keys.  Is she getting Alzheimer’s disease?  Or is this dementia?  What is the difference?  How much forgetfulness is normal with age?  Today she looks pretty good.  How can we know if she is ok?
