We’re proud to share a profile of our co-founder, Dr. Angela Bymaster, featured in PACEs Connection’s ACEs Science Champion series.
Dr. Angie runs her family medicine clinic out of a portable unit at Washington Elementary in San Jose, serving low-income, predominantly Latino families. Because the clinic faces the school’s drop-off line, she gets to “pick up the kids” before problems escalate — her version of “upstream medicine,” catching childhood adversity before it hardens into chronic illness.
That instinct is grounded in the science of adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), which links early adversity to lifelong health consequences — and in something deeper: years of walking alongside families in under-resourced neighborhoods and witnessing, up close, how trauma can shorten a life.
Dr. Angie turns that conviction into practice. She created Arte de Vida (“Art of Life”), a class where teens and parents explore their stories and express them through art, building empathy across generations. And now she’s bringing that same vision to Healing Grove, the new clinic she’s launching with Dr. Cheryl Ho — built around ACEs science, true long-term healing, and a membership model where every member helps fund care for two low-income neighbors.
We believe faith communities are an underused asset in this work, and that the language of faith and the language of healing belong together. Dr. Angie’s story is a window into why we built Healing Grove.
