On the Frontlines of the Pandemic, Our Team Reached Neighbors Directly
When COVID-19 shuttered schools and jobs, families in San Jose’s Washington neighborhood, one of the city’s poorest, were left scrambling for food and rent. Our Healing Grove Health Center stepped in. Partnering with the women’s empowerment group Madre a Madre, our team recruited neighborhood leaders who each contacted ten families to find out who needed help, then delivered food directly to their doors. We also built an online tool to help tenants generate eviction-protection letters to their landlords. As our director Brett Bymaster put it, families who have known hunger themselves were the most eager to serve.
