Healing Grove Sounds the Alarm on a Broken Quarantine Safety Net
When Santa Clara County offered wage-replacement subsidies so COVID-positive residents could afford to stay home, the help rarely reached the people who needed it most. A survey of our Healing Grove clientele found that fewer than one in five eligible patients ever received the subsidies, blocked by paperwork, language barriers, and months-long delays. At our clinic in San Jose’s Washington neighborhood, the positivity rate ran near 30%, against roughly 5% countywide. Our executive director, Brett Bymaster, warned that desperate workers were returning to their jobs to avoid homelessness, fueling the spread, and called for real quarantine supports to break the cycle.
