When the Pandemic Hit Hardest, Our Founder Helped Rally Silicon Valley
In the depths of COVID-19, our executive director, Brett Bymaster, formed the United Against the Poverty Pandemic coalition, uniting San Jose, faith communities, and local nonprofits to help families facing job loss and eviction. The need was staggering: more than 14,600 county families, including 30,000 children, were at risk of homelessness. At our Healing Grove clinic, the COVID positivity rate among low-income Latinos hit 28%, against a county average of 4.7%. The coalition delivered hundreds of thousands of pounds of food and nearly a million dollars in aid, proof of what united communities can do.
